After the liquefaction has been cleaned up we have piles of the stuff on our streets waiting for the council to pick it up. This little Gnome is obviously doing its bit as Christchurch cleans up after the 6.3 magnitude quake 22 February 2011.

Typical of many homes in Kaiapoi still to be demolished and rebuit.
Many chimneys fell from homes during Christchurch's 7.1 and 6.3 magnitude quakes.
Another home struck off Santa's Christmas delivery list; aftermath of a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Christchurch on 4 September 2010.
A sight becoming more common in post-earthquake Christchurch - lifting earthquake-affected buildings to allow their foundations to be replaced and or completely replaced.
This has made a huge mess for the residents to clean up. I heard on the news that homes have been damaged by subsidence in areas of earthquake-caused liquefaction like this.

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurred at 4:35 am on September 4, 2010 here in Christchurch. There was damage and destruction to buildings but no loss of life. Five months later (22nd Feb, 2011) the city was struck by another quake. This time we weren't so lucky. 185 people lost their lives. Many people lost homes and businesses. The central b...
This is the Summit Road below Mt Cavendish and shows a few remaining high buildings in the central city beyond (in setting sun). Just above centre is the doomed AMI Stadium (1) aka Lancaster Park, home to Canterbury cricket and rugby till the erathquakes.
The South New Brighton jetty has been closed for 3 or 4 years (fenced off) then the fence was removed and it was "open", but nothing has happened to it since the earthquakes, but it is closed again now, although it looks like a home made sign!
To those silent sentinels, the guardians of the night, who insured our peaceful homes and sheltered our children from fright. We give our thanks and praise for the sacrifice they bore, and pledge always to remember their gift of service in war. Gerard A. Geiger March 23, 1996
Taken soon after the 6.3 magnatude quake hit Christchurch 22 February 2011. A friend tried to get home when the road opened up and her 4 wheel drive went down. We could not get it out! The grey liquefaction has stuck the other car fast. It took less than an hour to grow this thick.
Only two of 20 houses left in the Rawhiti Earthquake Village. This from the sign on perimeter fence: "Since 2011, Rawhiti Domain has been used to provide temporary accommodation for those affected by the Canterbury earthquakes. Over 200 households have used the 20 houses while their own homes have been repaired or rebuilt. The demand for acco...
The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Christcurch, after the 6.3 magnitude quake on 22 February 2011. Of what many in Christchurch know as the Millers building, but for many recent years was the home to the Christchurch City Council, till just a week or two before the first earthquake of 2010. Now, in mid-2014 it is finally being demolished after nearly 45 months empty. A bus is leaving the new (temporary) bus exchange onto Tuam Street. But n...
My house (bought in March 2004) till the government procured it in October 2012, is finally being demolished. It will be an empty section in a couple of days, once they rip up the concrete base. Note the rainbow on right.
20140521_1080_1D3-24 It has started! Removal of the double-glazed windows is underway at my "red zone" house, now owned by the Government of New Zealand. Sold to CERA (the government agency) in October 2012 and has remained empty since, despite having little damage, apart from the tilt to the front from the land damage that occurred during the...
