A signpost pointing 'West' and 'East'. The sign pointing West is intact; that indicating East is broken and barely hanging on to the post. Refers to the condition of Christchurch City after the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011; the western wealthier suburbs were less damaged than the poorer Eastern suburbs. Also, progress on repair and rehabilitation of eastern housing had been slow. Crack repairs on the Rendezvous Hotel in Gloucester Street. Cracks have been injected with epoxy resin using syringes. The epoxy resin leaves a peak around each hole which will be ground down to a smooth surface. The wall will then be repainted. This process actually makes the wall stronger than it was originally.

Internal damage to a house in Richmond. A doorframe has visibly warped, leaving a gap between the frame and the door. Outside, cracks can be seen in the concrete patio. The photographer comments, "Sunroom - bifold doors are now separated from the frame. The doors on the left blew right out in a strong wind 2 weeks after the quake".

Aftermath of September 4th Earthquake in Canterbury. Shops on Colombo Street in Christchurch - damaged in earthquake and then partially demolished to reduce risk from unstable materials which might otherwise be dislodged in strong winds or subsequent aftershocks. The 1590 aftershocks recorded to date have continued to cause further damage.

Dried liquefaction silt in North New Brighton. The photographer comments, "This is the the top layer of liquefaction that has dried up in the hot sun. A broken eggshell is around 5 times stronger than these, but a fallen leaf is just not enough to break one. You can see underneath that the heavier sandy layer of liquefaction has dried and has cracked as well".

Kia Kaha (in the little red love-heart on the fence) can be translated from the Maori language as “Be strong and fearless!” “Be Proud!” or “Stand tall!” The term is used in many situations to give encouragement and support to family, friends and mates. Taken one week after the 6.3 magnitude quake hit Christchurch 22 February 2011. Proce...
